Welcome one, welcome all to my little project: Convergence, CV for short. Before I go into suuuuuper detail into things, I want to see if there are people that are interested in this kind of stuff.
Basically, we are looking at a retrofuturistic setting with a paranormal spin. Generally the whole concept is more geared towards espionage and the old "noire" style, but it wouldn't exclude possible powerplay/faction play of course.
Following here there will be a small lore dump detailing the universe and how it works. While as of now it's not ready (yet) to accept players and all that, if reception is good then I'll see what I can organize and do.
For now, please enjoy this small lore tidbit and tell me what you think!
Mind that this is very much still a work in progress thing, so really any input would be nice!
02. The Convergence
Seas and skies united as one
"The year is 1904 After Convergence. Yep, almost two thousands years have passed since all the planes of existance have merged into one. It is unclear what triggered this fusion between the material plane as we know it and the etheral.
Us humans where not ready for the absolute chaos that event brought with its arrival. Well, kind of. We were always talking about "the end of the world" from time to time. Turns out, the end of the world is kinda different from what we thought it was."
-Callum Decimus, 1904AC The Convergence is the name the inhabitants of Myhr have given to the event that merged together the Elysium and the Abyss together with the matrerial plane humans naturally inhabit.
In the beginning there was balance, light and dark, matter and ether. However, that duality would be upset when an all out war between Demons and Angels broke out. Always at odds with eachother, those etherals born from light and dark simply did not wish to coexist peacefully.
This war between the inhabitants of the Astral plane almost destroyed both contenders, for it was an eternal stalemate. Neither side had enough power to overthrow the opposition, so things kept escalating until both sides were basically trying to erase the other from existance.
Their eternal clash would then cause time and space of both the Abyss and Elysium to collapse upon itself. Realizing that their actions would inevitably cause their own undoing and the destruction of the Astral plane, the two sides agreed on a temporary truce to deal with the problem they had created for themselves.
The damage was already done though, there was no going back. The Astral plane was going to completely disappear. The only thing both Angels and Demons could do was find a way to survive.
The solution was to take what they could before it ceased to exist and put it somewhere else where time and space were stable. The solution was Convergence.
Through Convergence, entities from both the Abyss and the Elysium were able to make contact with the inhabitants of the material plane by projecting their essence into their world. Only a few had enough strenght and power to make the jump from their doomed home and in doing so, they would lose their bodies in the process. Jumping meant survival, but it also meant becoming nothing more than an intangible ghost.
The survivors of each faction would then establish themselves in their own bubble, trying to find ways to regain strenght and their lost bodies. Their presence did not go unnoticed thought. The inhabitants of the material plane would soon be aware of their squabbling (old habits die hard), eventually gaining the means to contact the Astral entities now residing in two separate spaces within the material plane which the human dubbed "Heaven" and "Hell".
That was the time when Demons and Angels and their eternal war for dominance would take an unexpected turn. Now that humans were aware of their existence, perhaps they could find another way to conquer eachother. They couldn't really fight with one another anymore...but maybe they could use humans to do so!
Myrh became their chessboard where each side made their move as both Angels and Demons scramble to regain their lost physicality as well as supremacy over one another. The rest, well, it's history...
"Myhr has changed since the Convergence. Before, things were simpler. Nowadays you can't turn your head before without seeing Elysian or Abyssal influence around."
-Julius Eximus, 1894 AC Myhr is a large atoll world consisting of multiple islands separated by one massive ocean. Human life developed and gradually expanded to encompass most of the available landmass.
Science and technology all around Myhr has advanced to a level similar to what you would find in the Earth's 1900s. This means that cars and propeller planes do exist, as well as radio and television. That said, some places might be more developed than others, depending on their current economic and political status. In general, everything is rather Vintage compared to Earth standards.
Politically, Myhr is as divided as it gets and in a constant cold wars state as Avatars of each faction still try to gain the upper hand for one reason or another. Some Avatars use their powers for personal gain, while others have to come to terms with what they are and the resulting implications.
04. The Astral Entities
Spirits of Light and Dark
Elysian (Angels): Elysians are basically Angels as we know them (angels/archangels etc). They can come in all shapes and sizes, as well as any gender. While they ain't necessarily forces of good or evil they differ from Abyssals for their methods of creating Avatars as well as their colors. They usually appear as winged humans with silver and gold armors or brightly colored animals.
They are all inherently empathic and gain power through bonds and harmony. As such, they will seek to coexist with their Avatar and form a lasting bond with them to hopefully one day completely merge into a single entity with their host, so that they may regain their lost body.
Abyssal (Demons): Abyssals are basically Demons (Abishai/Incubus etc). While not necessarily forces of good or evil, their power stems from chaos rather than harmony. Inherently possessive, the only way they can gain more strenght is if they amass it for themselves, either by barter or theft. As such, they seek to make a pact with their Avatars: their powers for their body. Their goal is to slowly consume their host's soul in order to gain strenght and take over their Avatar's body for themselves.
They usually appear as monsters of various shapes and sizes, usually with dark colors. They could also appear as humans with reptilian wings and black knight armors.
05. Avatars and Arcana
Embodyment of power
"Nowadays, Elysian and Abyssal fight a war of attrition. With their numbers being so small after the Convergence and the inability to fully manifest their powers alone, many have turned to humans in hopes of restroring themselves to their former glory."
-Noctium Optimus, 1901 AC Both Demons and Angels offered boons to the humans willing to offer themselves as hosts for their essence. By channeling an Angel or a Demon within their body, humans would be able to become an Avatar of said entity while also inheriting their Arcana: an ability unique to the entity they merged with; the strengh of which solely depends on the avatar's relation with its Astral entity.
Arcanas come in all shapes and sizes: from mind control, to pyrokinetics to flight to teleportation. The ways to acquire an arcana also varies depending on which entity a human makes a pact with. However, all Arcanas can be only one of two types: Abyssal (or demonic) in origin or Elysian (Angelic).
Elysian Arcanas are gained by sharing a body with an Angel and becoming their Avatar. By virtue of doing so, Elysian Avatars may use Elysian Arcanas and, with time, harness their inherent versatiliy. While using it non stop does not pose any problem for the Avatar, its power is heavily reliant on the Avatar's Angel. If the Avatar fails to commute with their Astral Entity, the power of their Arcana dims incredibly fast.
Abyssal Arcanas are gained by forming a pact with a Demon and becoming their Avatar. Abyssal (Demonic) Arcanas are usually stronger than their Elysian (Angelic) counterparts while also never really waning in strength, but such power always comes at a cost. The more its used, the more detrimental are its effects on the Avatar.
Any Avatar, regadless of their heritage, is capable of conjuring and materialize an Angelic/Demonic armor on their body if they so choose. The armor itself is fueled by the Avatar's soul and can protect its user from other Arcanas or any other threat. If the armor is shattered during combat, the user soul would be ripped to shreds...meaning it would prove fatal.
With sufficient experience, an Avatar may also be capable of harnessing the true power of their Arcana and enter what is known as the Astral State. While maintaining their Astral form is really draining, being able to evolve their armor to the point of being able to completely transform into their respective Elysian/Abyssal comes with a slew of perks and an immense power boost.
06. The order of the Praxic Fire
Not everyone is happy and ready to share their body with another entity or sell their soul for power. The order of the Praxic Fire is a secret human only organization deeply ingrained in Myhr political and social sphere that actively seeks to destroy anything Elysian or Abyssal by any means necessary.
Avatars are no exception.
Extremis malis extrema remedia: Si vis pacem, para bellum.
Grandmaster: The big boss of the Order and its founder. No one knows who they might be, but everyone within the Order know their power.
Magisters: Basically, the vice presidents. Only the most skilled two of the Order may cover this position. They operate on their own and answer directly to the Grandmaster.
Seekers: Members of the Order. Their job is to seek out and eliminate any Astral presence in their operative zone. To do so, they employ special assasination techniques to deal with Arcanas and silver blades to strike the fatal blow.
07. Character Creation
Ready Player One
Character creation stuff coming after sufficient interest is expressed by people. Players may choose to play as an Elysian Avatar or a member of the Order.
