What is a God, if not the amalgam of beliefs in a specific deification construct?
In this world, that is what they are at their core source, simply energies of a planetary body made manifest by the inhabitants' willpower to make reality bend to their wishes. It works, locally at least, because metaphysical constraints are far looser than one can reliably perceive at a mortal level. Think hard enough and what doesn't work, just might, and take on a life far beyond any measures and dimensions you might have set forward for it in the first place. Ah, but this is most likely already boring to you, so I should get on with it I presume? Yes, well, let's say that the Big Bang was actually not the beginning of everything, but the sudden death of a singular manifest, and we're all the new wellspring of life born out of its cosmic super death. Morbid I know, but also curiously accurate to what has happened in this selection of reality you're within as of now. Take those countless number of celestial figures and manifestations, and understand just how out of your depth you really are.
Now bring it back, further back, further damn you and lets center on a familiar playground for us-this reality's Milky Way. More comforting? A place of only one hundred thousand light years in diameter which presents an ever loving amount of things crammed inside for us to focus on. Ah, I forget, you're not used to thinking on even that scale, my apologies-lets focus back into maybe just the Orion Arm and its large wealth of stellar systems all massed within- that might be more reasonable to picture for now and once you're settled, we'll advance farther out.
Who am I?
Who you are? I cannot say, as you haven't even introduced yourself yet, you really should think before you say such things. Who I am is the principal spirit of a little floating planetary body with a singular moon, around a medium sized star, that shares the space with seven other planets and a multitude of different celestial objects. Yes, I'm what you'd call the god of Earth, but no, its not the one you are used to and no, it doesn't follow the same histories and no I will not discuss them. Just know that I am one in a myriad of many who has a place in this universe, much like you-wherever you happen to wind back up at, near or far.
To be frank I spend very little time in the actual plane known as normal reality, there are other dimensions to hop to bundled inside the greater shell of this construct. What you might call Heaven is the default setting of where we tend to hand out, its a weird place, but its nice here, and of course the parallel known as the Void has to mirror it. The Universe as it were doesn't actually have a mirror version, because its special like that, but parallels exist in outer planes due to the existence of the Universe as consequence. Yes yes, I'm hurting your mortal frame of mind, I get it, seriously though you should really sit down as you seem to be getting paler by the moment.
Righto, lets put it in special words for big boys and girls to understand, you're special right? Good, sit quietly and I'll put it in a better framework!
You are a God, or a Monster, your choice really I don't care much except for when I do, you know, because I'm not a blank faced vision speaking words at you or something. Your power comes from both your planetary body, which is your actual physical body and where your energy flows out from-not the representation you might use somewhere else like in the Heavens. Put it this way, if a star is an energy wellspring that we all divine our energies from, and we're all made fo the remnants of stars, then we are wellsprings of energy given a personality thanks to the inhabitants of our body. If you lose the planet, you lose your power source, and if you lose your population-then nobody is there to believe in you. Keep them both healthy and maintained if you want to survive.
You're sharing the space with countless others, unlike other circumstance sof reality this universe is flooded with lifeforms all of varying degrees of technological and magical entrepreneurial spirits. The gist of what you're doing here is playing nice or playing not very nice with others, and manipulating the universe to work in your favor by way of many means. In the end, it's a nice story about how you are desperately trying not to screw things up while also not letting someone else bowl you over while you try to stake your claim in existence when it's overrun with every other jerk like you wanting something different.
Oh my word, your eyes glazed over, fiiiiiine I'll just give you the damned pamphlet and elt you sort this crap out on your own-you big baby. I'll see you later, unless I won't, in which case nice knowing you! Except maybe not!
Nya nya and welcomes to my first setting on this site, but far from my actual first setting as I have been writing longer than some fo you have been alive meow meow Pleased to be showing off what I have on offer for all of you, you'll find this either to your liking or not and that's fine. Did you enjoy what that weirdo had to say? Doesn't matter mrow what matters is that you have the choice to waltz on in and show me what you can bring to the table in your own special ways nya
Ah I really should lay off the noises yes? Yes, back to normal talking now as we are being quite serious, yes.
Of Gods and Monsters is based around deity level player characters, who have to maintain certain parameters for their own existence and their growth, while having to interact with others who are on, above, or below their levels of power. In other words, you're a thing, that needs certain other things to live, while dealing with other things who might want what you have or you might want what they have. Oh hey cool its called living, neat!
The idea is actually rather simple, you'll come up with a singular deity, or maybe a sibling pair, perhaps a pantheon if you're feeling ballsy and want to force me to read more you absolute monster. Doesn't really matter what you base them around, its pretty free flowing yeah? Then you create a dominant species to worship them and make them actually real by way of mass will, so long as the collective conscious believes you to be, then you are. That's the hard part done, of course you'll have to explain what your planet is like since that's your physical body and all, maybe where your system is settled in on the Orion Arm. Not too complicated and when I see interest I'll put in the work on an actual player sheet to fill out and get groovy with.
If you do decide to torment me with multiple characters, do note they have to share the power in some way shape or form, and thus be made weaker when compared to a singular manifest. The added benefit being there are more than one and that opens its own can of neat worms, you know cause I like making this harder on myself. I'd say it's pretty clear that we're starting off comparable in strength to one another, doesn't mean you can't be the smartest, or the prettiest, or the most screwed in the head but do realize that all attributes have to flow to the same average point that you're no more strong than the next deity beside you.
That being said, there are totally way more strong people than you, and way more weak people, you're falling in the middle. Your species can be based around science, magic, magitech, all, or nothing it really doesn't matter so long as they have the power to stack up to others. One race has spellcasters, one has combat skins and energy weapons, and one doesn't need that and they can rely on just basic physics and biology and still kick the crap out of someone through ingenuity. Play fair to the others, and be kind, otherwise I won't like you very much if ya'll wanna be nitpicky janks.
You're wondering about Monsters, yeah you can be those instead, major difference is that they come from the Void instead but their physical representation is still the damned same as everyone else. Choose this if you want to go a route that is far more alien in design than the relatively humanoid format the deities follow, no your alignment doesn't change, there are douche gods and douce monsters and flipside as well. It's just a simple design choice where I slice down the middle on humanoid, and non humanoid representations to make some flavor.
That's about it, an RP about deity level peeps interacting with one another either in extensive planar issues, or playing intricate games of chess in the universe with their physical forms and their believers. I'll answer any an all questions, this is just the roughest of overviews and the concept is not fully meshed and fleshed yet. There's much work to be done but I'm not gonna if there ain't solid people who wanna get in on this, I will set a hard limit on players though as trying to maintain large numbers of people is dumb and while I can manage to split you all up it all inevitably falls back on me to give each of you sufficient reason to be here. Thus having a handful of dedicated players is how I'll be able to accomplish both without roping in some sucker to work with me as a partner GM.
Until then, meow meow I'll be here in the rafters watching for people to jump on in with commentary, I might be napping, or I might not be but you'll never know nya nya
Character Sheets/Worshiping Species/Planetary Body:
You are free to make as many divines as you wish, but only one planet and try to keep it to three or less dominant species on that planet for my sake. Cats suck at counting! Be aware you have to split your power between divines, not equally but powers need split, and put effort even if the other divines are side pieces, gotta fill out these details. do remember you have to stay below a certain threshold of power, you're as powerful as other divines, which is enough to dominate a planet worth of mortals but not enough to contend with older more established divines or to go off conquering other mortals who may be guarded by a similar deity. Its hard to wrap your head around the divine focus, I get it, but try to think you should be as powerful as a late teen to early adult but given magical powers in a world where there's everyone else with those same scales of power and age ranging from newborns to the ancients.
While on the mortal plane you'll be far more menacing and even feasibly world ending, in the divine realm where most of your interactions between divines should be taking place you're not nearly as special. Also remember, this is a mixture of fantasy, magitech, and sci-fi so if you wanna build something that seems out of place, it isn't.
Divine Characterization- Name: Who, are you? Title: What do you go by to mortals, are you of any importance to other divines? Did someone give you an embarrassing nickname? Divine Category: God, Monster, or are you gonna try to get smart with me and make up a category? I mean you can try, just also don't push it. Gods are humanoids, monsters are not, but if you wanna try to deep dive into something else esoteric then by all means, I'll humor you. Appearance: WHAT DO YOU LOOK LIKE DAMMIT?! Either give a solid detailing, or a good picture, or both works probably the best. Personality: NEW RP, WHO DIS? Tell us about this divine, don't skimp, the personality tells us how the characters plays. Aspect: What do you represent as a concept in faith others have within you, it can be all the stuff dumb mortals think about or it can be a small amount, depends on how many divines you share with, or if they believe in things that aren't actually divine at all, etc. Weapon of Choice: All divines must choose a weapon, nobody gets to be a pacifist god. Powers: What do you bring to the table? Is it fully divine based? Is it grasping from the mortal or other planes for power? Is it advanced technology that you designed with your mortals? Is it a fusion? GIVE ME YOUR SECRETS! History: What is your story? I wanna know! Motivations: What makes a man turn neutral? Power? Lust for Gold? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?.....Nope, wait, that was my interrogation with Zap Brannigan-what I mean is what is your driving focus, doesn't have to be conquering planets for more worshipers, can be anything you want-you'll always be wrong. True Weakness: One defining weakness, doesn't have to be glaring, can even be esoteric and weird as hell. However, even the divines must have something that utterly topples them. Greatest Strength: Where do you excel the most?
PLANETS?! I WANT A PLANET!
This is the truest of your physical form, on the mortal plane if this gets destroyed or suppressed you cannot manifest in any way and you are gone, same as if you lose your people but this one you can't come back from. While it's not against the rules to be a gas giant you need to recall what kind of species and manifestation you care to think of whether you should be terrestrial, moons, gas giants, etc.
Planetary Body- Name: Yeah you gotta name this one too, yes it can just be your own name Appearance: Is your planet ugly? Tell us now, layout of what it looks like Animals/Plant Life: What kind of crap grows and lives on the surface of your planet?! Dominant Species: This should be the sentient lifeforms that worship you, but who am I to judge Size and Location: Naturally how big is the planet in a relative scale, where in the territory is it located and where does it ti around in its stellar system?
Mortals, who needs em? Well, you do, actually
Species Name: Duh Appearance: What the be lookin as? Culture: General feel of what they are as a civilization History: General overview of what they've gone through Defined Power System: What do they base their power systems on, should mirror your own gods structure because they have faith in you.
